What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment that offers a discreet and effective way to straighten teeth and achieve a beautiful, confident smile. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign utilises a series of clear, custom-made aligners that are virtually invisible when worn on the teeth. These aligners are designed to gradually move your teeth into their desired positions over time.
Differences Between Invisalign and Braces
Invisalign and traditional braces are two popular orthodontic treatments used to straighten teeth and correct various dental issues. While both methods aim to achieve the same result – a beautifully aligned smile – they differ in several aspects.
Appearance
Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are made of clear, BPA-free plastic, making them virtually invisible when worn. They blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, allowing you to undergo orthodontic treatment without drawing attention to your braces. Many individuals appreciate the esthetic advantage of Invisalign, especially adults and teenagers who are concerned about the impact of traditional braces on their appearance in social and professional settings.
Traditional Braces: Traditional braces consist of metal or ceramic brackets attached to the front surface of the teeth. These brackets are connected by metal wires and secured with elastic bands. While ceramic brackets can be less noticeable than metal ones, traditional braces are still more conspicuous than Invisalign aligners. Some people may choose traditional braces for the functionality they offer in complex orthodontic cases, but others may be hesitant about their appearance, particularly during the treatment duration.
Treatment Duration
Invisalign: The duration of Invisalign treatment can vary based on individual needs, but it typically falls within the range of 6 to 18 months. Throughout the treatment, patients progress through a series of custom-made aligners that gradually shift their teeth into the desired position. The treatment duration may differ depending on the complexity of the case and the compliance of the patient in wearing the aligners as instructed by the dentist.
Traditional Braces: Treatment with traditional braces generally takes longer than Invisalign, lasting anywhere from 18 to 36 months. During this time, adjustments are made to the braces periodically to guide the teeth into their correct alignment. The duration of traditional braces treatment is influenced by the severity of the orthodontic issues and the biological response of the teeth to the forces applied.
Orthodontic Complexity
Invisalign: Invisalign is an excellent option for patients with mild to moderate alignment issues, such as minor crowding, spacing, or slight misalignments. It can also address some bite issues like overbite, underbite, and crossbite. However, for more complex orthodontic cases, such as severe crowding or significant bite problems, traditional braces may be a more suitable treatment option.
Traditional Braces: Traditional braces are highly versatile and can effectively correct a wide range of orthodontic problems, including complex cases that involve significant misalignments, overcrowding, and bite irregularities. The ability to adjust and customise brackets and wires allows orthodontists to exert precise control over tooth movement, making traditional braces an effective treatment for challenging conditions.
Maintenance
Invisalign: One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable, making it easier to maintain good oral hygiene. Patients can remove the aligners to brush and floss their teeth as they normally would, reducing the risk of plaque buildup and tooth decay. Additionally, Invisalign aligners should be cleaned regularly using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water to keep them clear and free from bacteria.
Traditional Braces: With traditional braces, maintaining oral hygiene can be more challenging due to the presence of brackets and wires. Specialised tools like floss threaders or interdental brushes may be needed to clean between the brackets and wires effectively. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential to ensure that teeth and braces remain in good condition throughout the treatment period.

Steps Involved in an Invisalign Procedure
Embarking on an Invisalign journey can lead to a beautifully aligned smile without the hassle of traditional braces. Here’s how the Invisalign process goes at Coolamon Dental Centre:
Initial Consultation
An initial consultation is booked with our experienced dentist to examine your teeth and ensure you don’t have any current dental issues. This is where you can ask questions, talk about the problems with your teeth and discuss what you want to achieve with Invisalign Ellenbrook.
Creating a treatment plan
Scans of your teeth are taken and sent for processing at the Ellenbrook Invisalign lab. Your dentist will use digital imaging to examine and devise an individual treatment programme specifically for your teeth.
Custom Made Aligners
Once you finalise your customised treatment programme, a series of bespoke aligners are made for you. You will wear each aligner for around two weeks before switching to the next one. The process can take anywhere between 3-24 months, depending on the extent of tooth movements required.
Your Treatment Progress
Every 4 – 6 weeks, you’ll visit your dentist for a check-up and receive your next series of aligners. The aligners are worn both day and night and only removed to eat or clean teeth. This allows gradual changes in the positioning of your teeth.
